The one-line problem
Open any chat with a language model. The default behavior is to type a single sentence and press enter. "Write me a marketing plan." "Help me with my resume." "Summarize this article."
The output matches the input. The input is ambiguous, so the output is generic. Then the user blames the model.
The model is not the bottleneck. The specification is the bottleneck. A one-line prompt is a one-line job description. You would never hire a consultant that way.
What a good request looks like
A useful request does three things. It sets the role. It gives the constraints. It defines the output shape.
Instead of "write me a marketing plan," the request becomes: You are a senior marketing strategist working with a direct-to-consumer skincare brand. Build a 90-day plan focused on retention, not acquisition. Budget is $4,000/month. Output as a week-by-week table with one primary KPI per week.
That is not a longer prompt. It is a clearer one. Every added word reduces the space of possible outputs.
The shift
Stop asking AI to do the work. Start asking it to produce a specific artifact under specific constraints, as a specific kind of person would. The change is small. The output is not.
